LCI: Free Health Clinics for Children

Tanzania: TMJ Hospital Holds Free Health Clinics for Children

TMJ Hospital in Dar es Salaam on Sunday organized a free health check-up clinics for children aged between one and 12 years. The clinics were organized as part of events to mark International Doctors Day.

The hospital's Managing Director, Dr Tayyabal Jafferjee, told the 'Daily News' in an exclusive interview that the clinics were organized under cooperation with the Lions Club of Dar es Salaam - Mzizima and Vital Supplies Limited, a city based pharmaceutical company.

"As of midday, a total of 380 children had been registered at the hospital. They were given free eye and general health check-ups," Dr Jafferjee said.

The chairman of the Lions Club of Dar es Salaam - Mzizima, Mr Shanti Shah, said children found with eye problems were given free spectacles, a common area of priority for the charity's deeds of service to society. Dr Jafferjee said of special interest at the camp was checking for haemoglobin levels in children. Those found with low levels of the essential blood component were given Appeton tablets, a nutritional supplement that also helps in managing cases of aenemia.

The camp targeted testing for haemoglobin levels "because that is the basis of the human body. If your haemoglobin level is low, you won't be active," he added. This reporter found a stilt dancer and masked mascots also entertaining the children, who had their faces painted for what was also meant to be a fun day for them. The hospital too gave its 30 doctors gift packages valued 60,000/- each.

It was kind of ironic that IDD was being marked in the country at a time when doctors in government hospitals were on strike over demands for a living wage, better tools and the right working environment. "That has not affected doctors in the private sector," Dr Jafferjee said. Mr V. Sai Prakash, the General Manager of Vital Supplies Limited, said they represented Kotra Pharma Ltd, Malaysia, manufacturers of Appeton.

The supplement is available in many drug stores as nutritional supplementation has become increasingly a key area of attention in disease treatment. "We have found out that malnutrition is very high in the country and children up to the age of five years require the highest nutritional supplementation for brain and overall growth of the child," he said. But nutritional supplements should never take the place of food, he added.

Staple food must always be given to the child but nutritional supplementation is only meant to provide additional benefits of food intake, he said. "Missing that point, is to miss the whole message about nutritional supplementation," he stressed. The camp was also meant to educate mothers on the need for nutritional supplementation of the children in that age group, he said. Vital Supplies and Appeton will carry out such programmes even in the future in order to have a healthy nation, the major resource of any society.

Zainab Ali of nearby Mikocheni said she had brought her one and a half year old grandson, Shadrack Mustapha, who first showed symptoms of asthma when he was only one year and three months old. She was given a prescription and told to bring the child again for follow-up.

Help us save 157 million children

Help us save 157 million children. Be a part of the solution through the One Shot, One Life: Lions Measles Initiative.

Make a donation that will be matched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

In October 2011, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation challenged Lions to raise US$10 million for measles. To help Lions in this effort, the Gates Foundation is donating US$1 for every $2 raised by Lions. This is a total matching contribution of US$5 million, the largest single donation in LCIF’s history! Together, LCIF and the Gates Foundation will provide a total of US$15 million to fight measles this year.

As of the beginning of July 2012, Lions have reached the halfway point in meeting this challenge. Donations now total over US$5 million. Thank you Lions! Together, we can raise the remaining US$5 million to reach our goal of US$10 million, helping children around the world. It is time to get involved.
Lions are collaborating with the Measles Initiative partners, a global collaboration of leading public health agencies, to rescue children from measles. Measles is one of the world’s deadliest vaccine preventable diseases: 450 children die each day. Yet, for less than US$1, we can vaccinate one child for life. You can help us save the lives of these children ensure they do not become a statistic.

In 2010, Lions and LCIF, with a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and support from local ministries of health and other Measles Initiative partners, provided immunizations for more than 41 million children in Africa. Now, as our efforts expand, Lions have the opportunity to help children in all countries where measles remains a heavy public health burden through the challenge grant.

A six-year-old boy who cannot walk was given a new lease of life last weekend.

Reading West MP Alok Sharma joined Pangbourne and Theale Lions Club to help present a specially designed electric wheelchair to young Owen Kew.

Owen, from Tilehurst, has dystonic quadriplegic palsy and epilepsy which means he is unable to sit up, walk or talk.

The presentation came after a campaign to raise £14,000 for the wheelchair led by Owen’s mother Helen with the support of the Lions Club.

The wheelchair has been designed for his requirements and imported from Sweden, as it is not available from the NHS.

It will give him much greater freedom in his day-to-day life and should last six to nine years.

Owen’s family applied first to the charity Newlife, which provided a grant of £11,682 towards the chair – the bulk of the cost but not enough for all the adaptations.

Pangbourne and Theale Lions Club heard about Owen a year ago and organised fetes, whist drives, Easter egg tombolas, quiz evenings and the Yattendon Shoot to raise money.

Wyn Watts from Pangbourne Lions co-ordinated the response from other groups and helped facilitate a £1,000 pledge from the Newbury Lions, £300 from Basingstoke Lions, £500 from Loddon Valley Lions and £300 from Pangbourne Lodge of The Masons.

Pangbourne and Theale Lions Club also contributed to the costs of Owen’s speech therapy and work carried out to the family home to make it accessible, including new driveways at the front and back of the house.

Mr Sharma said: “I was delighted to speak at this formal presentation of the new wheelchair to Owen, who is a remarkable young boy.

“I pay tribute to all those that have been involved in raising money for the wheelchair, which I know will really help Owen and his family who are so incredibly supportive.”

Mike Wilson, president of the Pangbourne, Theale and District Lions Club, said: “With Newlife, our fellow Lions, the Masons and our friends and supporters, we are happy to support the family and will give further help to Owen’s on-going needs.”
