Rainier Family Fun Day is a Huge Success!

The Cub Scout bake sale did very well,  as did the pancake breakfast.  The kids all seemed to have had a good time even though some of the homemade kites did not cooperate & fly.  We had over 40 children attend - plus their parents and grandparents!  WAY TO GO RAINIER!!!!

Juliette, from "Together" and "Rainier Community Cares" attended both our Scouts Breakfast and Rainier Family Fun Day events.  She brought free books for all of the children and donated complete, colorful kite kits.  Those kites flew very well!  Thank you, Juliette, for your time, help and donations, as you helped make our "Family Fun Day" a huge success!  We couldn't have done it without you and your organization.

Linda will post all of the pictures tomorrow.  The Lions auction was fairly successful.  Someone got a great deal on the BBQ at $275, but at least it’s not sitting in Art's yard any longer.  Thanks to all who donated and showed up to bid.

Linda called everyone last night to let them know that their bid won.   I was at The Chapel today at 4 pm to meet the people to pick up their items.  If you didn't pick up the items you won, please feel free to call me and make arrangements to stop by and pick them up.  I can be reached at:  (360) 292-5363.

Thank you all for attending "Rainier Family Fun Day!"  You are what makes our community GREAT!

Camp Leo Needs LIONS to Volunteer

Dear Lion Friends of Camp Leo,

I know that some of you are already wondering how you can help at camp this coming summer.  Camp dates are as follow:

Middle school camp is July 14 to 19th
Elementary camp is July 20th to 23rd
High School camp is July 20th to 25th

The following are areas that we do need Lion volunteer help. Look this list over and decide where you or your club may be able to help. If you can assist in any of these please contact me, Pauline Ostheller, at 360 598 2239 or email: lady.osth@gmail.com.

  • Clean lodge and Creekside lodge on Wed. morning July 24th
  • Provide a BBQ dinner for 250 campers and their families on Tuesday July 23rd. This can be done alone or in conjunction with another Lions club. If necessary, Camp Leo can pay for the food if the club buys and cooks the food. Menu is flexible.
  • Provide a craft/art project for a day. You will conduct four sessions with 8 to 16 children per session. July 15-18, 21-24.
  • The following are Middle School Camp activities where we need Lions help in leading and/or assisting.

Hike: (ridge/creek hike) Morning and Afternoon sessions
Monday, July 15
This is a short and simple hike up a trial behind the main lodge. The first 100-150 yards is relatively uphill after which there is a slight leveling out as the route follows a logging road. The trail will be marked if volunteers elect to lead this activity.

GPS Hunt:  Morning sessions
Monday July 15, Tuesday July 16 or Thursday July 18
This is a scavenger hunt where each competing cabin is given a GPS locator device and asked to find certain areas and items around camp. The list of coordinates will be determined ahead of time for participants.

 Grid Games:  Afternoon sessions
Monday July 15, Tuesday July 16 or Thursday July 18
This is a series of super sized board games including Yahtzee, Battle Ship and Checkers (possible for more to come). Precise description of each game is available.

Skit Search:
Monday, July 15 and Thursday, July 18 morning session, Tuesday, July 16, and Wednesday, July 17, afternoon session.
This is a traditional scavenger hunt where the group, upon finding all items on the list, puts together a skit which they will perform at camp fire that night.

Archery:  afternoon sessions
Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, July 15th, 16th, or 17th.
Bows and arrows. What more needs to be said?  Assist or lead if you have training.

Game Room:
Tuesday, morning session, Wednesday, afternoon session, or Thursday morning session
Below the dinning hall of the lodge is a game room equipped with pool tables, ping pong tables and foosball.  Participate and monitor.

Camp Olympics:
Thursday 3:10-5:30
A series of relay and challenge games where cabins compete for bragging rights. A full list of games and details will be made available later.

Scholarship applications review-vote meeting.  The vote has been postponed until the first meeting in May on the 13th.  Linda Lazelle will inform the scholarship committee on May 14th on the vote.  We have 2 candidates.  Brooke & Torrie.

White Canes – reviewed the schedule.  Bernice made a small presentation and stayed after the meeting to teach our new members about White Cane Days and how to put the white canes together.  She gave us a flyer on the Northwest Lions Foundation, too.

Update club meals $5 - We were looking for volunteers on making regularly scheduled dinners.  The suggestions were:  Meatloaf, hot turkey or beef sand, spaghetti, tacos, potato bake, casserole (Children under 12 eat free.)

Cooks for meeting dinners:
  • 1.  Taco Bar (or Meatloaf) - Linda Johnson
  • 2.  Spaghetti - Julia Green
  • 3.  Baked Potato Bar - Linda Lazelle
  • 4.  Sweet & Sour Meatballs - Kay Bryant (Linda Johnson will bring the rice)
Discussed the option of having the "Indian Fry Bread Tee-Pee" in our area at Blue Grass.  George received a phone call from the city requesting he call the vendor.  Most of the members are in favor of  doing this.  We will vote on it at the next meeting.

Trailer or Burger Stand:  we discussed whether or not to rent the Burger Den trailer from Olympia Host again this year.  It costs us $250.00 and it is hot and cramped in the trailer.  We have approval to build a stand in the park from the City of Rainier, but haven't received final approval from Thurston County.  We can use other canopies if we don't rent the trailer.

·        Cub & Boy scouts Table  (Bake Sale)
·        American Heritage Girls & Scouts information booths

Silent auction-April 27th

  • Several members will bring donations on Saturday
PPN update - George and Evan made a presentation to Centralia Lions Club.  Julia Green spoke about her first visitation with Bud to the Centralia Lions Club with Evan & George.  She said it was nice to meet new people and visit another club.  It's sad to learn that another club isn't doing so great, but they are going to sell our Peaches, Pears & Nectarines.

Dinner for 5 update - Bonnie Zimmerman is sending out invitations to the school leaders.

Road clean up  May 11th/  We will meet in the parking lot at the Rainier Chapel at 9:00 Am.

Beverly Jolley updated us on donation letters that she's written to get support for Blue Grass and the PR work she is doing.  Linda Johnson will write the Daily Olympian and send out letters to all of the Country Radio Stations in the area to ask them to promote our Blue Grass Festival again this year.

There is an ad in the TacomaScene.com about our Blue Grass Festival and Rainier Round-up Days. It mentions a street dance on Saturday night.  George contacted the Rainier Historical Society, Mayor of Rainier & Superintendent of Rainier Public Schools.  No one knows anything about a Street Dance or Block Party.  No one knows who placed the ad.  The Sportsman's Club is planning a dance on the Friday of the Blue Grass Festival weekend, but not on Saturday.

White Cane Days May 2nd at Jim Bob's Chuck Wagon & May 4th At Rainier Texaco

Hello Rainier Lions,
Please see the White Cane Days Schedule for Thursday, May 2nd at Jim Bob's Chuck Wagon, 35119 State Rt. 507, McKenna, WA, 10 AM to 7 PM.  We still need 2 volunteers for the 1 to 4 PM shift.  Also, if you can fill in should someone not be able to make it, please let me know.

We will be inside the restaurant and a portion of Jim Bob's proceeds for this day will be donated to the Rainier Lions Club for White Canes!  Thanks to President George for making this happen.

Cheryl Porter is the contact person at Jim Bob's.

A special thank you to Jim Bob's Chuck Wagon for their community service support!

On Saturday, May 4th, 10 AM to 4 PM, Rainier Lions will be set up at the Rainier Texaco.  We will be outside and the weather is usually raining, windy and cold -- but that could change!  To the volunteers who signed up for Saturday, please keep this in mind and wear warm clothing.  If we have volunteers to work past 4 PM and people are contributing, we can be at the Texaco until 5 or 6 PM.  Shanna Harritt is the contact person at Rainier Texaco.

I have included White Cane Days information for the new members -- and a refresher for all of us -- also Multiple District 19's overview of 2012.
Rainier Lions White Cane Days donations in 2012 was over $200.00.
Any questions, please let President George or me know.
THANK YOU FOR GENEROUSLY VOLUNTEERING YOUR TIME!
