The Phoenix Rising School Thank You

As you can tell, I'm a little behind on posting to our blog.  My apologies.  Here's a recent Thank You from The Phoenix Rising School.  George & I really enjoyed visiting their Living History Civil War Event.  Thank you all for putting on this event for Rainier!  Linda J.

South County Spring Youth Forum

On behalf of Rainier Community Cares, Mayor Randy Schleis, and the staff and students from Rainier School District #307, I want to extend a sincere “Thank You” to everyone who participated in our South County Youth Forum on  Wednesday, May 21, 2014.

It’ was an honor to emcee the event.  This type of event strengthens all involved, as it helps us to understand the responsibilities that we all have to our communities and country.

Our county officials showed enthusiasm when answering the questions presented by our high school students.  Their input gave our students a great insight into the complexity of the positions that they hold.  The Youth Forum experience will help to make everyone who attended better citizens.

We all appreciate everyone fitting our Youth Forum into their busy schedules.  We look forward to more of this type of interaction in the years to come.

Thank you all for a very positive and informative event.  We had a great turnout!

If you want to touch the past, touch a rock.  If you want to touch the present, touch a flower.  If you want to touch the future, touch a life.”

KL George:
Guests:  Donna Murr, Pat Bucknell and Cliff Brandssma, Dana Reynolds

Guest Speaker:

Dana Reynolds  Peru endeavors - In 2008, Dana went on a spiritual pilgrimage to Peru.  She eventually went to Tauccaa Paru to teach English to children K - 3,  Ketchua is the indigenous language there.. When she first arrived to Taucca, she saw vegetation that welcomed everyone that said:  "CUM TAUCCA."

The town is 12,500 feet above sea level.  There are heavy winds at 3:00 every afternoon, so the families need heavy wool blankets to keep warm.  Dana got funds together to buy blankets and food for the people in the small mountain town through "Hands of Hope."  The people received
  • Uniforms for students
  • Blankets,
  • Hats
  • Beans & Rice
  • Oatmeal, Lentals,
  • Fresh fruit & vegetables
  • School Supplies
  • Books
  • Roof (leaky roof fixed)
  • Community Kitchen - where all of the towns women can cook meals.
  • Community Showers
This was Dana's first presentation.  We were all impressed with her pictures an narrative of her travels and mission in Tucca.  In order to get supplies from the nearest town, at elevation 11,000 feet above sea level, they hire a driver.  It takes 1 1/2 hours to go 1,500 feed down the mountain to get food, clothing and supplies, but it is less expensive then shipping supplies into the town from the USA.

Dana took the children to the zoo for the first time in their lives.  They got to see real city life, play on a playground and visit all of the animals.  The pictures Dana showed us of these children glowing made a lasting impression on George and me.  The children radiated joy.

Through the Hands of Hope #18 Dana's help has transformed lives in this small community.

Donna Murr introduces new Zone Chair - Pat Bucknell.  Pat spoke about Project New Hope.
