MONTROSE, N.Y. – It was an event that ran the gamut from laughter to sorrow, and in the end there was a level of satisfaction as participants reached their goal.
The fourth annual Stay Awake-A-Thon at Hendrick Hudson School, which ran from 5 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday, drew a record 700 students and adults and raised $60,000, said event organizer Debbie Costello.
The event was hosted by the Hendrick Hudson Leos Club and High Schools Against Cancer. All the proceeds from the Stay Awake-A-Thon will be donated to the Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Comprehensive Cancer Center at Hudson Valley Hospital Center and Happiness is Camping, a free summer camp for kids with cancer and survivors.
With a battle cry of “cancer never sleeps, and neither will we,” the event included live musical and dance performances, a male beauty contest, yoga, poems and remembrances of loved ones.
Two past supporters who lost their battles with cancer, Richard McIntyre and Don Reynolds, were also recalled fondly.
