Lions Clubs International & Special Olympics

February 2013
Dear Lion,

Did you know that 33 percent of Special Olympic athletes cannot see well or are in need of different glasses, and six percent have serious untreated eye diseases? However, the 200 million people in the world with intellectual disabilities are often neglected or have limited access to doctors, trained specialist or basic health clinics. As a Lion and Chairperson of your Foundation, it gave me great pride to attend the Special Olympic Winter Games earlier this month in Korea, and witness the impact we are having through the Special Olympics Opening Eyes program.

Lions and LCIF are having an impact on the more than 300,000 athletes that have received vision screenings in more than 70 nations! Can you believe, nearly 100,000 of those screened needed corrective glasses? We are able support Special Olympics and this initiative and so many more because we serve, we are everywhere and we care.

You have seen the success that our partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has brought, helping nearly 200 million children around the world by protecting them from measles. To put that number in perspective, that is the combined population of Germany, France and Italy. What an amazing accomplishment! I would like to again express my gratitude for your support and your support and efforts for the One Shot, One Life: Lions Measles Initiative.

Our partners often choose to work with our Foundation because they know the ability of Lions and LCIF to make an impact on others, and they know of our global reach and compassion. Through sight services, disaster relief, supporting youth and meeting humanitarian needs, we share our good luck and fortune with people all over the world.

No matter the size of the project, we are able to make a difference. If all these service projects can get support from Lions, we can achieve more partnership in the future, allowing us to serve the world even better.

Sincerely,

Wing-Kun Tam
Chairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation
