Taylor Morris is a 23-year-old U.S. military bomb disposal expert who almost died after stepping on an IED on May 3 of this year. He was leading a team of U.S. Army Special Forces to a classified location in Afghanistan when he stepped on an IED and lost at least part of each of his limbs to the explosion.
‘As soon as I stepped on it, I knew,’ he told John Resig, the co-owner of the website which first told the story.
‘There was a moment, then I heard the blast. I felt the heat. I knew I had lost my legs. As I somersaulted through the air, I watched my legs fly off.’
This hero did not just stop there; Morris remained conscious enough to yell to medics to stay away from the blast site until specialists could come in and verify the area was clear enough for others to enter without endangering themselves or others.
Back in the United States just days later, Morris became only the fifth patient at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. to survive a four-limb amputation, and is currently ahead of schedule with his rehabilitation. At the end of May, his stitches were removed and he was fitted for prosthetics. He is now learning to deal with his new limbs with the help of loved ones close to him.
His girlfriend Danielle has been there each and every step of the way. Upon receiving the Bronze Star with Valor, Taylor said of his girlfriend, “If I had hands, I’d take this Bronze Star and pin it on Danielle.” He added, “It’s been so hard and she’s been here the whole time.”
One of Taylor’s dreams is to own a cabin on a lake, but his current situation has dramatically changed his ability to chase that dream. To help raise funds for Taylor, his family and friends have been organizing fundraisers for the Navy hero, and IJ Review wants to help as well.
