Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research Testimonial

Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research

After Lynda's son, Ryan, passed away, his family received a letter from the recipient of a badly needed cornea transplant. Because Ryan was a registered organ donor, a woman's vision was restored. Hear more from Lynda in this testimonial.

About:

Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research (LEITR) was founded by members of Tampa Bay area Lions Clubs in 1973. Since that time, it has provided the gift of sight to more than 55,000 men, women and children through cornea transplantation.

Mission:

The Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research (LEITR)  strives to fulfill the pledge to Helen Keller “to be the Knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.”

Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research is leading the fight against blinding eye diseases through the recovery, evaluation, and distribution of eye tissue for transplantation, research, and education.
Three distinct entities work together to accomplish
LEITR’s objectives:

• The Eye Bank, the largest in the world, provides eye tissue for research and transplantation
to ophthalmic specialists and surgeons nationwide.

• The Lions Eye Institute Foundation (LEIF) raises funds to support sight-related outreach, education, treatment and research.

• The Ocular Research Center (ORC), the first research center in the world to be directly combined with an eye bank, drives the development of new diagnostic tests
and treatments for delaying, arresting or preventing the progression of blinding eye diseases.
