Rainier Lions met at the Rainier Chapel for a dinner meeting. Brenda Flaherty arrived at 6:30 with dinner. She'd prepared homemade spaghetti, garlic bread, salad (homemade ranch dressing) and homemade cheesecake with a raspberry topping, Dinner was wonderful. Spectacular! FABULOUS!! Thank you, Brenda!!!
Attending the meeting were: Linda Lazelle, George & Linda Johnson, Evan Burnett, Beverly Jolley, Chris & Bernice Beck, Rodney Mitchell, Victoria Fanton (& her daughter Grace), Brenda Flaherty (& her children - Keith & Carol), Shirley Gibson, Art Runyan and guest Sandy (Bluegrass performer) and Guest Fred Derome from Puyallup South Hill Lions Club.
Topics discussed: KL George announced that there will be no LERC meeting this month.
KL George shared information about letters we received:
We receive a patch for our banner for tree planting.
Camp Leo sent a thank you letter. They came up with all funds needed for camp this year.
Health Van:
Victoria Fanton spoke about the Health Van. She has 1 pharmacist, 7 nurses, 1 dentist & 3 teenagers who have volunteered to man the van on August 23, 2012 from 11 AM - 7 PM. Any school age child, under 19, is eligible to have the immunizations updated. They will update the Child Profile database, for their records. Any immunization a child would require for school will be available. DETAP, TEDAP (depending on age), MMR, Chicken Pox & Polio, etc. (The DETAP and TEDAP have the vaccine for Whooping Cough.)
There is no charge for the vaccinations. If you have medical insurance, however, they will collect your insurance, so the insurance company can be billed.
Victoria has an appointment for an interview with the Nisqually Vally News tomorrow. She's talked to Dr. Wu of the Olympian already. We are expecting to vaccinate 200 - 300 children.
Chris Beck will contact someone, Jerry S. (Tree Farm) to see if we can put notification on the school reader board about the vaccinations.
There will also be 1 dentist on hand to do dental screenings for school age children.
Adults will receive sight, hearing, glaucoma, blood pressure and diabetes testing, free of charge.
Destination Rainier:
Linda Johnson will contact the Nisqually Valley News - to get 100+ copies of "Destination Rainier" for the performers of the Rainier Bluegrass Festival. Art Runyan said most performers live outside our area and would enjoy the article about the 20th anniversary of our festival.
Cataract Surgery Request:
We received a request to help someone pay for cataract surgery. Evan looked into the cost, which is $2100. The Lions Foundation will pay for the surgery, but we have to come up with 50% of the cost to reimburse the foundation. Evan also contacted Dee McDermot about getting outside help paying for the surgery. Chris Beck will look into the insurance issues involved in this case because the patient had been in an automobile accident.
We voted on whether or not to pay for 50% of the surgery. Chris Beck put the motion up for a vote. Linda Johnson seconded the motion. The motion was carried 100%.
George Johnson discussed having aluminum can recycling bins located around town - as a fundraising project. We will continue to look into this, as 1 pop can weights .55 ounces - so it will take over 32 cans to make 1 pound, which will bring in approximately $0.50 - $0.60 per pound.
Guest from Puyallup South Hill Lions:
Fred Derome spoke at tonight's meeting. Their club celebrated their 25th anniversary a couple of years ago. He gave each one of us a key chain with their information on one side and a perpetual calendar on the other. Very neat gift! This is the first perpetual calendar I've ever seen in this format. Thank you Fred & Puyallup South Hill Lions!
Bluegrass Performers: Art Runyan said that David Wuller will be taking over Bluegrass next year. David is a self employed woodworker, who lives in Eatonville, WA. He has two people who will line up the music and has located a stage out of Longview. They expect 100 people to come in for this years festivities - performers and their families. Last year we had about 70 attend. Art and Charlotte will sell T-shirts and mugs this year. Next year the Lions offered to take over the T-shirts, if needed.
Rodney Mitchell will speak at Bluegrass when they announce the winner of the 50/50 raffle. Carol Flaherty will go around collecting money for tickets for the raffle. The tickets are $1.00 each or 10 for $5.00!

Binders:
After the meeting was adjourned, George and I both spoke with Fred Derome. We invited him to come back an show the Rainier Lions Club the binders he makes for all of his members to keep with them.
Their members have a form in the member's binders for people that has room for their name, address, phone number, email address - and it has a special form for new contacts that asks if they have any hearing or sight needs. It also asks if they are interested in learning about the Lions Club and if they know anything about Lions Clubs and what they do. He will email us a copy of this form.
They also give all of their project chairs "special projects" binders - which has information from the previous years activity and all the information needed to manage this years activity. Fred created the Puyallup South Hill Lions newsletter, using MS Publisher, so these forms are created in that program. It took him 3 months to teach himself how to use this program.
