Yelm Chamber of Commerce Renewal???

Dear Rainier Lions Members,

We've received a renewal form from the Yelm Chamber of Commerce.  The cost is $85.00 per year.  We donated $250.00 a year to Rainier Middle School the last two years through one of  the Yelm Chamber of Commerce programs.  We need to vote on this membership.

In the last year, George & I attended one Yelm Chamber of Commerce meetings.  According to the person that we registered our attendance with, we were the first and only members of the Rainier Lions Club to ever attend one of their meetings.  George has attended several of the Tenino Chamber of Commerce meetings, though.

The other consideration is that the Yelm Chamber of Commerce gave an honorary award to JZ Knight, Ramtha, who is a controversial business leader in our area.  You can read the Nisqually Valley News article about this award at:  http://www.rse-newsletter.com/2013/12/jz-knight-accepts-2013-yelm-chamber-award/

Our Lions Club serves the best interest of our local community and we should support those businesses and leaders who exemplify our clubs values.   Perhaps we could contact Superintendent Tim Garchow about donating directly to Rainier Middle School and have the funds given to their music program.

Should we reconsider renewing our membership with the Yelm Chamber of Commerce?  Please note that this item will be up for a vote at our next meeting.   The Rainier Lions Club values all of our members thoughts and opinions.  Your vote is important.  If you can't attend, please email one of our regular members:  Evan Burnett, George Johnson, Bernice Beck or Linda Lazelle with your vote.

Thank you,

Linda Johnson

Lions' Commitment to LCIF Changes Lives

Dear Lion,

As the year comes to an end, I want to thank you for all of your admirable service work through your clubs and through Lions Clubs International Foundation. LCIF would not be what it is without your support and dedication to service.

This can easily be seen through your disaster relief response to Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. As I was shown the devastation and wreckage during my visit recent visit there, I was humbled and saddened by what I saw. But I also saw Lions' efforts to provide aid, including where other organizations could not. This filled me with great pride. Lions on the ground have made a huge difference in the month following the typhoon.

Lions around the world are helping to amplify typhoon relief efforts through more than US$ 1 million in disaster relief donations to LCIF. The Lions, Multiple Districts and countries that have made large contributions and commitments for the Philippines can be found on the LCIF website.

Along with Lions, our partners at VSP Global should also be recognized for their commitment – they are matching every dollar that VSP Global employees donate to LCIF for disaster relief in the Philippines, up to US$10,000. We are grateful for everyone's support – every dollar helps and can restore hope when someone has lost everything.

I witnessed more of Lions' dedication to supporting LCIF at several recent fundraisers. Contributions made at local golf events in Japan and MD 300 Taiwan will strengthen humanitarian programs. And I am looking forward to attending a Lions golf fundraiser and tournament in Spain this March. Lions must register by January 31, 2014. The tournament proceeds will support LCIF's efforts to stop measles worldwide.

Lions around the world are truly making a difference. I am excited to see what the next few months hold for Lions and LCIF as we continue our humanitarian efforts to change lives.

Sincerely,

Wayne A. Madden

Chairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation

Shocking! Rescuer Gets Hug and Kiss from Grateful Lion! Really!

Check out this GodFruits Video:  HERE
This is a real video of Jupiter, a lion Ana Julia Torres found sick and starving six years prior and which she nursed back to health. Torres runs an animal shelter in Colombia, protecting an estimated 800 rejected and sometimes tortured animals — largely from drug traffickers and paramilitary warlords, as well as from circuses and animal-smuggling rings, according to the New York Times. Truly amazing!

Merry Christmas from Lou and Kathy - our Christmas Letter

Lion Chris Beck sent us the email below:

My 'baby sister' and her husband (Kathy and Lou Aschenbrenner) live in their motor home since he retired as a commercial contractor some years ago.  They donate their time and talents helping 'Hard Hats for Christ' in building churches and related structures for church youth camps etc. Currently they are in Rainier, OR. working on facilities for Mountain Ministries 'addiction' facilities. I marvel at all they've done to help so many others since retiring! Wanted to share this with you.  Chris

I checked out Louis & Kathy's Blog.  Their work - in retirement - is very inspiring.  Please visit their blog (listed below.)  Thanks!  Linda Johnson

From Kathy and Lou Aschenbrenner:

Merry Christmas from our home to yours!

I did post our Christmas letter on our blog along with a link to some photo's.

Update on Playground

Way to go, IDA & FAITH!!!!

A special "Thank You" goes out to the Nisqually Indian Tribe for the grant they presented to Ida Boesch in the amount of $5,000.00 for the Playground Expansion at Rainier Elementary School.

Ida's been doing a great job, not only  getting funding for the playground, but she's also received other bids for comparable playground equipment that is more affordable.  She also has connected with groups who have volunteered their time and building skills to put the playground together.  This will save $7,000.00.

All in all - Faith and Ida have gathered over $11,000 for the playground - in three months time.

Santa Comes to Rainier!

Dec 7, 2013 Rainier City Hall 6 PM:

About 100 people showed up for the annual Christmas Tree lighting at Rainier City Hall. We briefly went outside to light up the tree. It was so cold, we hurried inside to warm up hot cocoa & treats before we sang Christmas Carols, with the help of the Nisqually Valley News Christmas Carols book, while the children waited patiently for Santa to arrive on the fire truck. Santa arrived with lights flashing and a parade of his personal elves dressed in their fire fighting gear. The children waited in line for gifts and to tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas.

Dec 9, 2013 Rainier Chapel 6 PM:

The Rainier Lions Club celebrated at the Rainier Chapel in the spirit of giving by hosting a free dinner for their members and anyone who helped the Lions serve the community of Rainier over the last year. Over 60 people attended their dinner of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn, stuffing, rolls, butter, salad, spiced cider and a wide variety of home made pies. The pies, made by Bud & Julia Green – with the help of 2 sisters from their church. The lemon meringue was the first pie to disappear.

He read their names from the tags on the gifts and presented them one at a time. King Lion, George Johnson, spoke about the words “Holiday” and “Christmas,” providing an interesting history about them. After George spoke, Santa arrived with special gifts for each one of the children who attended. There were enough gifts for everyone; adults and children alike.
