Guest Speaker: 

Dana Reynolds  Peru endeavors - In 2008, Dana went on a spiritual pilgrimage to Peru.  She eventually went to Tauccaa Paru to teach English to children K - 3,  Ketchua is the indigenous language there.. When she first arrived to Taucca, she saw vegetation that welcomed everyone that said:  "CUM TAUCCA." 

The town is 12,500 feet above sea level.  There are heavy winds at 3:00 every afternoon, so the families need heavy wool blankets to keep warm.  Dana got funds together to buy blankets and food for the people in the small mountain town through "Hands of Hope."  The people received

  • Books
  • Roof (leaky roof fixed)
  • Community Kitchen - where all of the towns women can cook meals.

This was Dana's first presentation.  We were all impressed with her pictures an narrative of her travels and mission in Tucca.  In order to get supplies from the nearest town, at elevation 11,000 feet above sea level, they hire a driver.  It takes 1 1/2 hours to go 1,500 feed down the mountain to get food, clothing and supplies, but it is less expensive then shipping supplies into the town from the USA.  

Dana took the children to the zoo for the first time in their lives.  They got to see real city life, play on a playground and visit all of the animals.  The pictures Dana showed us of these children glowing made a lasting impression on George and me.  The children radiated joy.

Through the Hands of Hope #18 Dana's help has transformed lives in this small community.  


Donna Murr introduces new Zone Chair - Pat Bucknell.  Pat spoke about Project New Hope.

Suzanne Gayda spoke about CARE.  This is an organization that helps prevent the explotation of children in 3rd world countries.  (San Miguel, El Salvador)  Last year they earned $80,000 to fund their cause.

 PPN update – first order in.  We are parterning with several groups again this year.  We need more volunteers for PPN presentation visitations.  For information on visitations contact Bernice Beck.

White Canes update Bernice $319 – learned that Stuarts sells alligator, python and other fine meats.  We received a donation from Jim Bob's Restaurant, in addition to donations from the community.  We added to the funds and sent a check to NW Lions Foundation for $500.00.

  • Burger Den  - Lions will be working the Burger Den again this year.  The Girls Scouts didn't get approval from their central organization.

Low Vision Center email – George told about the Corbin Low Vision Center.  Neither Donna Murr, nor Pat Bucknell knew about this center.  We will send the flyer to them.'

Services Saturday for Richard Jolley.  Bernice Beck, Evan Burnett and Linda Lazelle are going.

Member Dues need to be paid by June 30, 2014 : Single $65 Couple $97

 Fall Auction / tie in with pancake breakfast has been tabled for discussion until later.

McKenna Fest update – Evan - What do we want to do there (Date? 8/9 or 8/16) Evan will get back to us with more information about this festival.

Minutes for February 24, 2014


I'm sorry I forgot to post our minutes for our meeting on February 24th.  Here are the minutes:

Cataract Surgery:  The surgery motioned for acceptance by Brenda F and seconded by Linda J. Motion carried unanimously to pay secondary to Medicare for the surgery.  (Patient name withheld due to HIPPA regulations.)  The cost s/b approximately $700.  The NW Lions Foundation won't cover the surgery or secondary because the patient has Medicare as their primary carrier.  

George recommended that RLC contact Roy Lions and Yelm Lions to see if they'll cover part of the
secondary costs, as the patient lives in McKenna.  (Roy & Yelm are closer to McKenna then Rainier.)

Jeannine Pia talked about Rainier Community Garden & the contributions they're making to the community of Rainier.  They have a monthly potluck on the third Tuesday of each month.  Starting in Spring, they will have work parties at the garden every Saturday from 9 AM to Noon.  They grew over 3,000 pounds of fresh food and donated over 2,500 pounds of that food to the Rainier Emergency Food Center.  They have 39 raised beds and have a newly planted orchard.  They need help spreading mulch around the fruit trees in the orchard - after they get their watering system in place.


George will go to the City Council Meeting Tues. Night to get approval to purchase Crossing Flags for the four cross walks on 507 in downtown Rainier.  


The members of the Lions Club discussed building the Concession Stand.  We've waited about 2 years for final approval, which hasn't been forthcoming.  We decided to table that idea.  George suggested that we turn over the Burger Den to the Girls Scouts.  (They'll discuss this opportunity and get back to us.)  We decided not to rent the Burger Den trailer and just put up a canopy and tables to work on by the covered area in the park.  

Bonnie Zimmerman gave us 4 Scholarship Apps that were received timely.  We actually picked them up late because Bonnie was out ill, but they were in on time.  Some of the applicants have completed some of their Lions community service activities already.

Recent Activities:
  • Handrail in Senior Center was installed
  • Wheel Chair Ramp - was accessed for Bob Kelly.  The fact is that the patient has a wheel chair ramp already and a deck.  He wants the deck & ramp removed and re-installed because there is some rot in the wood.  The deck is attached to the patient's home, so this job will require a licensed & bonded contractor.  Bob Kelly (Lacey Sunrise) concurs with George's evaluation. 
  • BINGO at Rainier Elementary School - FUN.  Go if you get a chance.  Tim Garchow is the best BINGO caller.  Watch out for the "traffic jams at the prize table" tho!  The "Seahawks" basket raffle earned the playground extension fund $500.00!!!  Ida & Faith have earned over $15,500 towards the playground improvements in just a few months!  
  • Coffee with a Cop - was very busy.  Sonja put the group in the back of her restaurant, so they may have this event at a different place - City Hall or ??  Very informative event.  (Article on another blog post.)
  • Valley Heart FREE Breakfast has been moved to the last Saturday morning of every month. They serve breakfast free, as people run out of food then and many don't get paid until the beginning of the next month.

Family Fun Day was discussed and will be in late April or early May.  We will have another Family Fun Day in June with Rainier Community Cares.

White Cane Days - will be chaired by Bernice Beck.  We will have stations at Texaco, Stewart's Meats, Jim Bob's and hopefully at Rainier Market (if it opens in time.)

The club decided to give a basket and Christmas tree to the Rainier High School REF Auction.  The Rainier Lions Club is one of their sponsors ($150.00)

George asked for volunteers to cook dinners,  or for members to decide whether to Cook; have a Potluck,  or have our meals catered.

LERC  will be on Thursday, February 28th.

George showed our new Rainier Lions Club Logo, which was approved by membership.

Speaker:  Roberto Mozzarella talked about Agenda 21 & Sustainable Thurston County.  His group has scheduled a meeting with Sandra Romero on December 6, 2013.  Sandra has regular meetings with our citizens and City Council Members once a month.  She met for coffee in Rainier on November 24, 2013.  You can find out when she meets in Rainier again on the Rainier City Hall website at:  City of Rainier.

Scouting Letter for Donation - The scouts asked us to donate $50.00 to sponsor 1 eagle scout at a special dinner.  Julia motioned to pay for the dinner.  Linda J. seconded the motion.  The motion was carried unanimously.




Caroling for Cans Dec 13th w/ FFA, Scouts, Community Garden 6 PM at Rainier Chapel. Everyone is on board.

Christmas Party Dec 9th:  Teri, Brenda, Julia and Linda J are getting ready for the dinner.  Julia has money to pick up a turkey and some of the fixings at Safeway.  (Turkey will be free with a purchase of $150.00 - we fronted her $200.00 cash for some of the supplies.)  Santa, "Don" is arranged for.  There will be several guests attending.  Invitations need to be sent out through "evite."  Menu:  Turkey, stuffing, yams, cranberry sauce, spiral cut ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn, pumpkin & pecan pie, spiced cider, juice & coffee or tea.  We need a head count.  George and I have gifts set aside for the party.  Chris Beck has gifts for children & we have hard back books for Santa to give to children as well.

Theater on the 10th:  Bernice said the tickets are all sold out.  The Rainier Lions Club sold 10 tickets, so we will not earn any funds from this activity.  She gave us the money for the tickets and I wrote the Shelton Lions a check for the amount due.  (9 tickets were sold.  One check was written out to the Shelton Lions.  I wrote a check for the difference & will deposit the checks and cash from our members.)

Grapefruit Sales:  Bernice made a flyer for this years grapefruit sale.  You can order grapefruit any time for a February 8th delivery.

Christmas Tree Placement:  George called Rick @ the Rainier Market.  (They plan on opening the grocery store December 20, 2013.)  We can place the trees in the covered area in front of the Rainier Espresso & Pizza.  Rex & Jenny will collect the Christmas Tree payments.  We will pick up the payments once a week.

City working on Concession Stand:  Randy has a meeting with the Thurston County Commissioner next month to go over the details.  We will have use of the concession stand during Bluegrass and for Halloween.  Other then that, the City will plumb & wire.  We will supply all of the building material for the stand and furnish.  (George & I have a refrigerator and storage cabinet already.)  The City of Rainier can rent the concession stand for weddings, receptions, reunions and other activities - with the funds going to the City of Rainier.  .

Soccer Fields update:  The fields have been approved.  They will be put in soon.  Thank you to Rex & Jenny and the Soccer Moms of Rainier for your diligence and hard work!

Recap planning meeting:  The house was packed at City Hall.  The meeting ran overtime.  We will meet again December 17, 2013.  We are pleased with the results.  Everyone who attended spoke up about their concerns for the city.  We do NOT want any big box businesses in Rainier.  We decided on a future with a sewer system in place, so our city can grow.  We want to limit businesses to small, unique businesses with a central city theme.  A farmers market would be nice.  Randy or Fred will contact Fairpoint about making a small park by their building a gazebo.

Scholastic "Reading Action Program" Webinar:  George read the letter from LCI about this webinar.  Julia Green, Teri Rendhal & Dawn Kerry will look into attending this webinar.  

Future of our Lions Club.  George mentioned this at the end of the meeting.  The members need to decide leaders for next year.  This year George is President; Evan - Vice President. For the last few months I've been doing the blogging, secretarial work (except for 2 online reports done by Brenda Flaherty) and Treasurer's job.  June 30, 2014 is my last day as secretary or treasurer.  George & I will help David Wuller & Nancy Bay with Bluegrass.  George is the Chair for Peaches, Pears & Nectarines.  I will continue with the blog, unless someone else is willing to take over that responsibility, as well.  

George J & I have been very active in the club for the last 3 years.  There are weeks that we put in 50 hours or more each.  We have been helping bring our community together through our Lions Club activities.  

George & I work with the following groups in town:  Rainier City Hall, Boy & Cub Scouts, Rainier Community Cares (Together), Rainier Public Schools, Eagle View Christian School, Rainier Historical Society, Rainier Senior Center, Rainier Sportsman's Club, Rainier Emergency Food Bank & Rainier Community Garden.  ALL of these groups in town can use help.  If you want more information, please contact us at:  (360) 292-5363.

Veteran’s Day:  George read a passage about Veteran’s Day; the meaning behind it and where the tradition started.

Follow-up & Why I am a Lion - At first Chris spoke about AMVETs 264 and then he talked about how he moved to Rainier 40 years ago.  There was a lot of bulling going on at the school.  Then the school burned down.  They changed the atmosphere at the school.  At first they worked on changing it 1 teacher at a time; then one parent at a time, then finally one student at a time. 
Chris & his wife Bernice liked working through the school system.  All of their children attended Rainier Public Schools. 
          Twenty years passed and Chris was invited to a Rainier Lions Club meeting.  He liked the unselfishness of the members; their commitment to service and camaraderie.  He went to a couple of meetings.  He became excited about the Lions and invited his wife to come with him.  They joined and have been lions for 20 years.

Melvin Jones Award:  George noticed that we have enough at LCI to nominate a Melvin Jones winner.  He nominated Becky Waldron.  Chris Beck said she was going to be given the award, but passed away prior to the nomination being finalized.  We nominated Becky for the award.  This was approved unanimously.

Halloween in the Park Update: Brenda and Tami Clark said that Halloween in the Park was a huge success.  Hundreds of people attended the festivities.  We look forward to doing it again next year.  Teri Randahl will chair this event next year.

Grapefruit:  Bernice & the Lions want to offer this fundraiser to other groups.  We can start selling grapefruit now.  Delivery is expected February 8, 2014.

George read the Union Gospel e-mail.  They will provide glasses and hearing aids to people in need for a small fee.  We will work through them for glasses & hearing aids, (but continue to work with the NW Lions Foundation for cataract surgery.)  We can get eyeglasses and hearing aids free, if we donate $500 a year to the Union Gospel Mission.  Right now, we tabled that idea.  We decided to reserve the money for cataract surgery and other community needs.  We will pay on an individual basis for eyeglasses and hearing aids.  If the need becomes great, the Lions will revisit this option.

Christmas Tree Placement – no decision yet, due to Rainier Market reopening.

Brenda, Terri & Julia will plan the food for the Lions Christmas party.  I will help with gifts.  Christmas Party will be at the Rainier Chapel on Dec 13th.

Caroling for Cans will be on December 14th.  Evan and George will contact the FFA and choir at RHS about caroling with us this year.

The Shelton Lions Night at the Theater:  yearly fundraiser at the Olympia Little Theater.  Call Bernice
Beck if you want to buy tickets.

Trifold:  Linda Lazelle volunteered to work with Bev Jolley on creating a couple more trifold displays for the Rainier Lions Club.

BOARD MEETING MINUTES @ 8:00 PM

The board met after our regular meeting at 8 PM.

We voted on the following items: 

Handicapped Door:  K. Ballanger needs a door, so her wheel chair will fit.  Her home has a 32” door and she needs a 36” door.  The Fire Department will install the door.  The Rainer Lions Club voted unanimously to purchase the door.  (Bud 1st, Bernice 2nd)

LCI Donation:  We voted to donate $500 to LCI towards the Melvin Jones award.  We all voted “yes” except for Evan Burnett who voted “Nay.”  The motion passed.  (Chris B 1st, Julia G 2nd)

Union Gospel Mission Donation:  No one motioned to vote on donating to the Union Gospel Mission.  We decided to table this until we have requests for hearing aids or glasses.  Most expenses went to helping for eye surgery last year.

Hooved Animals Donation:  We voted on whether or not to donate to the Hooved Animals of Thurston County.  They have many animals that they’ve saved from starvation, who are in need of health care and food this year.  We voted to donate $250 to them.  (Evan B 1st, Linda J. 2nd)  All voted “Yes” except Bernice Beck who voted “Nay.”

MEETING MINUTES 10-14-2013

1.  Playground Expansion:  Faith Boesch spoke about her idea for expanding the playground at Rainier Elementary school.  She and her brother, Johnnie, attend other sports functions in the area - through school activities.  She noticed that most other playgrounds are very fun to play on.  She thought "why can't we have a playground like this at our school?"  She talked this over with her parents.  She wrote a letter to superintendent Tim Garchow and he liked her idea.  

In the last 1 1/2 years her idea has gone from the research phase - finding out about playground equipment suppliers and what was available - to the grant writing fundraising phase.  Now the whole community is becoming excited about the expansion of the Rainier Elementary School Playground!

Please help Faith spread the news!

Julia Motioned to donate money to the Playground Expansion.  Linda J. seconded the motion.  Evan Burnett suggested a donation of $250.00.  The motion was carried unanimously.

George & I have placed donation jars in several businesses around town.  Brenda is placing some in the teachers lounges and different areas in the Rainier Schools.  So far they have over $600 in donations - not including our donation today.  The fundraising started about 2 weeks ago.  We hope to have the playground expansion completed before school is out. One of the concerns of parents is to have part of the playground covered.  We are hoping to exceed the minimum amount required to put in the addition and cover the existing playground, too.

2.  John Kirry – 1st Vice District Gov. Spoke about being a Lion.  How he was in the Air Force, then became a commercial pilot.  He moved to Gig Harbor in 2006 and became a Lion.  One of his favorite projects is LERC.  He's our 1st District Vice Governor.  

3.  Wheel Chair Ramp:  Brenda.  Brenda Flaherty has had a request for the Rainier Lions Club to help make a wheelchair ramp for a 19 year old girls with a brain tumor.  60% of her tumor was removed a couple of years ago from her brain stem.  It is growing again, which is effecting her gross motor skills and mobility, particularly on her left side.  She cannot walk up stairs.  She wants to walk (using a walker) as long as she can before she goes into a wheel chair.  

  1. Clay Morse has a friend who works for EZ Access.  They design and make ramps.  (Clay will follow-up.)
  2. There is also a person, Bernie Lincoln  at Rainier Chapel who has offered to design a ramp, but the church would need some help in paying for the materials.  (Brenda will follow-up.)
  3. Bob Kelly (Lion) and Lacey Sunrise Lions also make wheel chair ramps.  So all of these options are being looked into.  (Evan or Chris will follow-up.)


4.  “Why I am a Lion” Art Runyan  Art and his wife, Charlotte, moved to Rainier over 21 years ago.  They belong to many clubs, when they lived in University Place.  Their neighbor wanted to start a Lions Club in Rainier, and they became 2 of the charter members.  They enjoy the social activities and fun we have together.  They have stayed on as active Lions members because we do so much for our community.  He's amazed at how much we do!

5.  Essay Contest & Peace Poster:    Julia Green  George is handling the Peace Poster contest.  Julia is handling the Essay Contest. Julia said that the paperwork has been delivered to Rainier High School for the essay contest, but no one has entered, so they decided to offer the contest to Eagle View Christian School.   Barbie Ballou is very excited about having both contests at Eagle View Elementary School.  George emailed the paperwork to Barbie.  We're waiting to get the final response from the teachers there.  There is about a 1 in 20 chance of winning the essay contest.  The prizes offered are airfare to Japan, Europe or South America (winner's choice) and being a guest at a Lions house in the foreign country of their choice for 4 to 6 weeks (plus spending money.)  The prize for the Peace Poster Contest is a trip to the UN General Assembly and $5000.

6.  Memorial:  Chris Beck.  The Veterans Memorial in Rainier is managed by the City of Rainier.  There are 5 vets who do not have their names or pictures on the memorial wall.  Chris will make a formal presentation about this and how the Lions can contribute to this project.

7.  Update on Fuji Apples:  George  There are still a few people who need to pick up their boxes of apples.  George announced how much the Lions Club earned and that we will have a few extra boxes to donate to the Food Bank and Senior Center.

8.  Eagle View Christian School update on their fundraisers & PPC

9.   Leader Dogs $250  The cost of a Leader Dog (to be trained, etc.) runs over $30,000 per dog.  Sight is our primary mission as a Lions Club, so our group decided to donate again this year.  Evan motioned to donate $500 to Leader Dogs this year.  Brenda seconded the motion.  The motion was carried unanimously.

10.  Halloween in the park:

The students in Rainier ROCS (Rainier Organization of Caring Students) are very excited about dressing up & decoration the covered area in  for Halloween in "BOO-owski Park.  They are planning on having a "THRILLER FLASH MOB."  There are many businesses who are going to be serving treats to the children who come!  (Ginger Street, Froggy Trader, Main Street Cookies, Turner Automotive, Sportsman's Club and more.....)

11.  Christmas Tree Sales may be able to be placed at the Rainier Hardware Store parking lot.  Clay Morse is making arrangements to acquire the building - to make into a youth community & training center.  Glenda's Espresso will stay in the parking lot.  Say your prayers for the youth center.

Guest Speaker:  Donna Murr spoke about her goals and objectives for the upcoming Lions year.  She talked about this years District Governor, who has been her mentor.  She shared the rules for hosting our dinner on August 12, 2013, which the District Governor will be completely responsible for handling the agenda.  (We will not have a regular meeting.)

KL George Johnson introduced our other guest, Terri Warren.  We discussed membership.  Linda Lazelle will send out letters to members who have not paid dues yet.

  • Covington called George and he shared an update about the mixup on Tacoma Lions with Covington.  They (Covington) will handle fruit sales in Tacoma.

We voted on chartering the American Heritage Girls.  Rod Mitchell motioned that we charter the AHG.  Chris Beck seconded the motion.  The Rainier Lions Club unanimously voted "YES" to charter the Rainier American Heritage Girls club #0307.  Lion Linda Lazelle wrote a check for the charter fee.

Vote on officers has been confirmed and approved.


Scholarship applications review-vote meeting.  The vote has been postponed until the first meeting in May on the 13th.  Linda Lazelle will inform the scholarship committee on May 14th on the vote.  We have 2 candidates.  Brooke & Torrie.

White Canes – reviewed the schedule.  Bernice made a small presentation and stayed after the meeting to teach our new members about White Cane Days and how to put the white canes together.  She gave us a flyer on the Northwest Lions Foundation, too.




Update club meals $5 - We were looking for volunteers on making regularly scheduled dinners.  The suggestions were:  Meatloaf, hot turkey or beef sand, spaghetti, tacos, potato bake, casserole (Children under 12 eat free.)

Cooks for meeting dinners:

Discussed the option of having the "Indian Fry Bread Tee-Pee" in our area at Blue Grass.  George received a phone call from the city requesting he call the vendor.  Most of the members are in favor of  doing this.  We will vote on it at the next meeting.

Trailer or Burger Stand:  we discussed whether or not to rent the Burger Den trailer from Olympia Host again this year.  It costs us $250.00 and it is hot and cramped in the trailer.  We have approval to build a stand in the park from the City of Rainier, but haven't received final approval from Thurston County.  We can use other canopies if we don't rent the trailer.

PPN update - George and Evan made a presentation to Centralia Lions Club.  Julia Green spoke about her first visitation with Bud to the Centralia Lions Club with Evan & George.  She said it was nice to meet new people and visit another club.  It's sad to learn that another club isn't doing so great, but they are going to sell our Peaches, Pears & Nectarines.

Dinner for 5 update - Bonnie Zimmerman is sending out invitations to the school leaders.

Road clean up  May 11th/  We will meet in the parking lot at the Rainier Chapel at 9:00 Am.

Beverly Jolley updated us on donation letters that she's written to get support for Blue Grass and the PR work she is doing.  Linda Johnson will write the Daily Olympian and send out letters to all of the Country Radio Stations in the area to ask them to promote our Blue Grass Festival again this year.

There is an ad in the TacomaScene.com about our Blue Grass Festival and Rainier Round-up Days. It mentions a street dance on Saturday night.  George contacted the Rainier Historical Society, Mayor of Rainier & Superintendent of Rainier Public Schools.  No one knows anything about a Street Dance or Block Party.  No one knows who placed the ad.  The Sportsman's Club is planning a dance on the Friday of the Blue Grass Festival weekend, but not on Saturday.
