1.  Shine Specialties:  30 Min  - This local company made our Bluegrass Tee-shirts for 2013.  They did a great job, using 2 colors.  They were affordable and their outstanding quality was 

  the reason we invited them to speak to our group, local businesses in the area as well as           members from other Lions Clubs in MD-19.  

Shine is a home-based business that started almost 6 years ago.  This business is their "10 year retirement plan" and their mission in everything they do - is to Glorify God.  Being a home-based business, they have very low overhead costs, which they pass on to their customers.  They only pay for their materials and the loan on some of the equipment they purchased in order to do business.  They hope to have their equipment paid off soon.

Laurie said that she prides herself in providing excellent customer service.  Their turnaround time rate is very quick.  Their motto is:  "If you can think it, we can ink it!"

Some of the products they produce are:  Poly metal signs (road signs), first aid kits, buttons, mugs, jugs, trophies, award plaques, bags, Clear NFL stadium bags (no registered trademarks), tee-shirts, bracelets, thumb rings, temporary tattoos, hats, decals - there are over 700,000 different products to choose from.  (We have their catalog, if you'd like to see it.)

2.  Rainier Food Bank:  10 Min

REFC is the largest satellite food bank in Thurston County, of their 18 satellite food banks, serving over 200 families per week.  They get almost all of their food from outside the Rainier area from:  Trader Joe's, Costco, Safeway, TFAB (Federal program) etc.  They receive a lot of fresh produce from the Rainier Community Garden, which donated over 1400 pounds of freshly grown produce to REFC this year.  Local farmers donate fresh eggs, produce and meat.  

Nothing that is donated to the food bank is wasted.  NOTHING!  If it goes "bad" they give it to farmers to feed to their livestock or put in their compost pile - which comes back to the food bank in the form of fresh food.

The REFC provides food to Crossroads, Emanuel Lutheran Church, Tenino Heritage Baptist Food Bank, Rainier preschools & day care centers.  48% of the people that come into our food bank are from Yelm, or areas just outside of Rainier.  (McKenna, Roy, Tenino, etc.)

REFC applied for their 501-c3 status, but they haven't received their paperwork, yet.  They've been told that they're approved, but they haven't received their paperwork, yet.  They applied and were approved in January.  Without their 501-c3 certification, they cannot apply for grants. That being said, they are paying approximately $1300 - $1400 per month in expenses.  Their rent, which includes water, heat & electricity, is $400 per month.  The majority of their other expenses go to paying for gas for their vehicles - which are needed to pick up food in Lacey, Olympia & Tumwater.

3.  Wheel Chair Ramp Update: Brenda  The area for the ramp to be put in has been cleared out and is ready for the Fire Department to build and install.  The ramp will be finished the weekend of November 9th.  

4.  “Why I am a Lion” Bud & Julia   -  Bud spoke about why he became a member of the Rainier Lions Club.  He & his wife, Julia, were considering moving out of the area - because of the lack of community here.  They wanted what is best for their young children.  They looked at all of their choices.  They decided to stay and become a part of "the solution."  When their son, Dameon wanted to become a Cub Scout, they found there were no troops in town.  They asked several groups to "Charter the Scouts" and they all said "NO."  Then Bud asked George & Rod from the Lions.  They said "YES!  WHY NOT?"  The rest is history.  One thing led to another and here they are - Loyal Lions!  

5.  Halloween in the Park: Brenda  The Rainier ROCS are very excited about Halloween in the Park.  They have posters plastered all around the school!  The Girl Scouts are bring several cars for "Trunk-or-Treat" and the Rainier Community Garden will have a "Trick-or-Eat" bin where people can donate their non-perishable foods to the food bank.  There are several businesses & civic groups who will be giving out treats at B0000-kowski park.  Come join us for a great time!

6.  Tents:  George  - We're meeting in the Red Barn - in Rainier to gather the tents and give them out to the troops!  SEE YOU THERE!

7.  LIONS Display Board: George  - We need at tri-fold cardboard display board about the Rainier Lions Club.  Anyone that wants to work on one, contact George.

8.  Interest in other groups:  George - We have many civic groups in town.  Join one, or just visit one.  We are in this community TOGETHER.  Let's communicate and partner with one another!

9.  Christmas Party Dec 13^{th -}   

10.  Do we want to adopt a Christmas project or join one that already exists?  Fire Auxiliary, Food Bank?   We decided to talk to the pastor at Rainier Chapel and donate to one of their families as well as the Rainier Fire Auxiliary.

12.  New Businesses in town - Please support our new businesses in town:  Bikini Bottom Tanning Salon & Retro Candy Shoppe, Pupper's Pet Supply & Rainier Market.  The first two businesses opened in October.  The market plans to open December 1.  Whoo-Hoo!

13.  School playground drive - Over $1000 earned so far & counting!!!!

2.  Update on Fuji Apples:  Linda L. -  the sale is going well.  We've sold about 60 boxes of apples that she had on record, so far.  When the other members gave their updated totals - the number of boxes changed to 71.

3.  Dictionaries:  Linda L. & Terri Rendhal were going to deliver the dictionaries.  There are other members that thought they might be able to attend as well.  (The delivery went well and the article in the Nisqually Valley News was very, very nice!)

12.  Girl Scouts not AHG - American Heritage Girls turned down two ministries and the Rainier Lions Club as charter organizations for the Rainier American Heritage Girls Club.  We were all very disappointed.  The parents were told that everything would be fine, go ahead and buy the girls their uniforms & materials.  We were sent the $325 charter back, but all of the girls and their families were not able to be refunded for the costs of their uniforms, etc.  Sad, so sad.  

The girls are joining the American Girl Scouts, now.  The first meeting was during our board meeting on September 16th at Jimmy's building at the Rainier Chapel.  The families had a wonderful time!  We really appreciate the American Girls Scouts for coming through and giving our young ladies a chance to join in their fun activities.

September 9, 2013 Meeting Minutes

Linda Lazelle brought clam chowder, salad, rolls & homemade apple pie for dinner.

George opened the meeting at 7 PM with the Pledge of Allegiance, the singing of "America" and a prayer.  He read the following quotes:

James Penny—“How can we expect our children to know and experience the joy of giving, unless we teach them that the greater pleasure lies in the art of giving rather than receiving.”

KL George Johnson introduced our guests:  Lloyd & Mary Anne Howell.  Lloyd & Mary Anne seemed to enjoy our meeting and were actively engaged throughout the evening.

George began by talking about why he became a Lion.  His vision is to serve God by contributing to our community and bringing it together.  He became a Lion over 10 years ago, but when he started working at Big Lots, he had to drop out because he had to get up at 3 AM to be at work by 4 AM.  It was too difficult for him to be up late on Monday nights.  He rejoined when his schedule changed and he no longer had to be at work on Tuesday at 4 AM.  

George went on to thank the volunteers for Bluegrass & Peaches Pears & Nectarines.  He updated the club on Bluegrass & Fruit.  We were short on nectarines.  We had some bad boxes of peaches & 1 bad box of nectarines.  George called the grower & Deb said that if the fruit is picked after it rains, sometimes water gets down the stem & the pit area of the peach / nectarine molds.  We may get our fruit from her again next year, or we may get it from Cherie.  (The boxes of fruit are all 28 lbs. from Cherie we can have staggered shipping.)

Linda J. discussed making a Club instruction Manual, so everyone has the information on our projects from start to finish.  This way people can "hit the floor running" with projects.

Brenda F. has all of the decorations ready for "Halloween in the Park."  George will continue to contact local businesses about having tables to give treats to the kids in the park.  Julliette Pia is going to talk to the RHS ROC students about helping decorate the park for Halloween.

Linda L. gave a Dictionary Update.  The date is Sept 23.  Art, Linda, Bud & possibly Bev Jolley will meet at the Rainier Elementary School at 8:30 AM.  (Bud will go to work after RES) Then the remainder will go to Eagle View Elementary School at 10:30 AM.  We have the dictionaries, letters and labels.  Linda will put the dictionary packets together.

We discussed Christmas Caroling at local Nursing Homes.  We still need a chair / gifts / pick dates.  Bud Green said that the Cub & Boy Scouts would be interested.  He remembers making ornaments at a nursing home with patients when he was a scout.

Christmas Caroling for Cans - do at Christmas Tree Lighting or Door to Door?  Chair / Co-Chair.  We may do both.  They discussed using a trailer and bales of hay, so the carolers don't have to walk all around the city.

Essay Contest. Peace Poster Contest & Scholarship.  Teri Chair.  Brenda/Kay co-chair.  We will get the information about these projects to Teri, Brenda & Kay.  We need to work with both schools on the Peace Poster Contest, as the middle school students are eligible to enter that contest, too.

Road Clean-up.  Evan set a date for Saturday October 5th.  We'll meet in the church parking lot at 9 AM.

Health Van is available Jan 2 – 9.  George is confirming date with School.  The dates that work for the school are between Jan 6 - 9.  George is waiting to hear back from the school nurse to set the final date.

Apples Update:  Linda L chair / Bernice co-chair.  The Scouts, Rainier Community Gardens & Yelm Lions are going to partner with us on Fuji apples sales.  It's looking promising.  We have 
2 dates that we can pack apples.  The strange thing about the packing dates we were given, is they are both on a Wednesday.  Usually we pack apples on a Saturday.  We were given October 16 & 23 for packing dates.  We'll get back to Linda Lovely-Wright about the packing dates.

We voted on the Christmas Party.  Brenda made a motion to have the party held at the Rainier Chapel.  Bernice (& 2 others seconded the motion)  It was voted unanimously to have the party at the Rainier Chapel.  Brenda with Chair.  Julia G. & Linda J. will co-chair.  The date is set for Dec. 13, 2013 (a Friday).  We will invite all of the people who've helped us this year.  It should be a huge party.

Linda J. gave a brief presentation on the MD-19 Zone 6 cookbook.  She asked everyone to email her recipes with pictures and brief stories.  The cookbook is this year's project of our Zone Chair, Donna Murr.  It will be put together and put up on Amazon in both the Kindle edition and a print form - through Amazon's Create a Space.

Fundraising Idea:  Walk can be exceptionally profitable.  Host the walk on the trail starting here in Rainier.  Wants us to talk about doing this walk together with Lacey Midday Lions Club.  Find a sponsor for T-Shirts and portabile restrooms.  $30 is the low end price range.  5K, 10K, 15K.  We both have 501-c3 foundations that would be helpful in getting funds to buy T-shirts.  (We have restrooms, so portable restrooms aren't necessary.)  Joint committee to get the fundraiser together.  (Planning for next year on the Sunday after Round-up Days.)

Pat:  LERC - new machine to read progressive lenses automatic lensometers.  Should increase their output.  Bill Miller is setting up training with Michael Petty to teach how to use lensometers.

Ron Lind:  Fundraiser - Insuk has lots of 5 gallon buckets that we could use to make into stools to sell.  He has 20 so far.  They are acquiring about 3 buckets a month.  Fishing, gardening, planters, (bug-out bucket? For Boy Scouts?)

3-Club meals $5-$10 Tonight's dinner was beef stroganof, carrots and chocolate cake - made by Brenda Flaherty.  Linda Johnson will make the dinner for the meeting on April 22, 2013.    (Some ideas for dinners are:  Meatloaf, beef stroganof, hot turkey sand, spaghetti, tacos, casserole, split pea soup.)

5-Club call person - Linda Lazelle isn't sure if Chris Fantion wants to renew his membership in the Rainier Lions Club, so Linda L will call to remind people for next meeting.

8-white canes update Bernice updated us on white canes.  We will have the white canes at the next meeting, so people can learn about white cane days and how to put the canes together.

9-Dinner for 5 update - Torrie and her family will not be able to attend as they are going to a "Together" function on that day.  There will only be four students and their parents.  We will be inviting Tim Garchow this year.  Dinner will be an all you can eat "Taco Bar" at Mr. Doug's in Yelm on May 25th at 6:00 PM.

Brenda F. will take invitations to the people at the school, so they will be notified.

10. PPN visitation will be made by George J., Evan Burnett and Bernice Beck next Monday in Centralia, so there will not be a board meeting on April 15th.

11-Road clean up  May 11th.  We will all meet at the Rainier Chapel at 9:00 AM.

12- Update on Boy scouts and American Heritage Girls.  We now have 20 Cub Scouts, 9 Boy Scouts and    9 American Heritage Girls.

13 - George Johnson has called, emailed and texted Victoria Fanton - but he's received no response from her.  She is our Membership Retention Director and Tail Twister.  She hasn't attended a meeting in several months.  We've received the Tail Twister items from her.  (She gave them to Brenda Flaherty, who turned them over to George.)  We will give them to Rodney M., so he can "Twist Tails."

14 - Art & Charlotte Runyon will not be at this years Blue Grass festival.  (They are going to one in Eastern WA.)  We discussed not renting the Burger Den this year, but will either set up a cooking area under the covered part of the park, or set up canopy's to work under.  We will borrow a trailer to lock up the equipment at night.  We have a small refrigerator that can be used for keeping cheese, etc. cold.  We will buy canned pop just before July 4th when it is on sale.  Bev Jolley has already started sending out donation letters and is starting on the PR for Bluegrass.

Terry Skinner:

She’s attended Rainier Schools since 1^st grade.  3.857 GPA, she’s #1 in her class in GPA., She’s in more than 5 clubs and President of Honor Society & SADD.  She has 350 community hours so far this year.  She’s in AP Calculus.  She wants to be an actuary for an insurance company.  She just turned in a scholarship to St. Martins and she’s been offered a scholarship to Eastern.  She works at Yelm Cinemas and babysits a lot.  She likes to read & hang out with friends.  She plays 3^rd base in fast pitch. 

She raised $8,000 for a trip to Europe.  She had a great time.  She went to Italy, Greece & France.  She washed windows and did a lot of work to go on this trip.  She will have to live on St. Martins campus if she gets the $10,000 leadership scholarship on top of the $16,000 scholarship she already received.  (Benedictine scholarship.)  It’s a lot of work to pay for schooling at St. Martins.

Hope to have a positive impact on the world.  She tries to be kind and has a bubbly personality.  She enjoys volunteering.  She will continue building her community work.

Why does she deserve this scholarship?  She needs the money for school.  She hopes to make a difference in the future.

She pays for her own car repairs.  She had to have $500 set of springs to have replaced.  A friend replaced these parts and something else failed which cost a lot more in the end.  Her JEEP “Just Empty Every Pocket.”

George thanked me for making the banners and making the dinner for about 50 people!  Very nice!

Bob Kelly and Jim LaBelle present the “Melvin Jones Award” to one of our members.  It is the greatest recognition that a Lions member can receive from the LCI.  Our clubs donations to the Melvin Jones Foundation helps fund major disaster relief around the world. 

In 2011 the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation challenged LCI to fight Measles.  LCI raised $10 million and Bill & Melinda Gates matched it with $5 million – for a total of $15M to fight measles worldwide.

Bernice and Art escorted Linda Lazelle to the front of the room to receive her Melvin Jones Award.  Linda worked from 1983 – 2007 at the Attorney General’s office.  She retired in 2007.  She’s received a lot of awards through her work and has been recognized by fellow employees & colleges. 

Linda is a charter member of the Rainier Lions Club.  She was their first secretary.  She is now the club treasurer.  She is now caring for 2 dozen baby chicks at home.  She enjoys visiting with her grandchildren and children.

George mentioned about the auction that’s coming up in April.  Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts & American Heritage Girls!

Evan had 2 pieces of cake…..3 pieces????

Second Announcement of New Offices for the 2013 -2014 year:

The Kites will be purchased at the $1.00 store (Limit of $75.00) for the Rainier Family Fun Make Your Own Kite Day.  We plan on purchasing 50 kites.  We’ll need string and tails for the kites, too. 

Bernice Beck mentioned that there will be a bowling fundraiser by Spanapark.  This is the Spanapark Lions Club big fundraiser for the year.  The Daffodil Princesses will be there.  It’s a lot of fun. 

Bernice Beck:  We will have fundraiser at Jim Bobs Family Restaurant on Thursday May 2, 2013 from 10 – 7.  On Saturday will be at the Texaco in Rainier on May 4, 2013 from 10 – 6.  Bernice explained about what the White Cane Days is all about to our 4 new Lions Clubs.  Evan explained about the man the Rainier Lions Club provided cataract surgery for – through the NW Lions Foundation.  Bernice passed around a sign-up sheet.

“Knights for the Blind.”  Helen Kellers challenge to the Lions Clubs International.

The Dinner for Five will be held on Wednesday - May 15^th, at Mr. Dougs Restaurant.  The RLC pays for dinner for the top 5 students and their parents (or guardians).  It will be a buffet.  We will guarantee 35 people will show up for dinner.  The NVN will show up.  (The RLC scholarship will be announced at graduation, though.)  Price has not been determined, yet.

There will be a special board meeting next Monday night to discuss Bluegrass Festival planning.

 

The Lions Clubs eradicated “River Blindness” worldwide.  It took five years to achieve this, but it has been achieved.  The Lions Clubs makes a big difference in the world. 

George mentioned the different activities that are going on in the area.

Together (Rainier Community Cares) had a CPR class a couple of weeks ago.  (You can contact Juliette Pia for more information on CPR classes.)

The Rainier Food Bank is on Wednesdays and Saturday 9 AM – Noon.  They have a clothing bank that they’ve started.  They will be an auction in the near future.  There is a family of 8 that has had a house fire.  They are gathering supplies for this family right now.

Rainier Lions Club Minutes for February 25, 2013

Guests in attendance:  Bud Green, Bill Evans, Kevin McMains

George went over the items on our agenda while we were eating dinner. 

We said the pledge of allegiance, sang America and George said a prayer.

Bill Evans:  Bill talked about the future of the Lions Clubs and MD-19.  He is taking a proactive approach to leadership in our clubs.  He believes in families and that Lions Clubs should encourage families to join the clubs.  We were very impressed with Bill and his attitude toward Lions, the future of Lions Clubs.

Kevin McMains talked about American Legion.  He was awarded the Purple Heart.  He sold raffle tickets to a turkey dinner and Mineral Lake Fishing Derby.  The proceeds go to the vets and community.

We formally voted on giving Roy $100 dollar donation..There was an informal vote in favor of donating $100. To Roy Community Lions at the last meeting, but Linda Lazelle left before the vote, so we voted again.  The issue unanimously passed.  The funds have been sent to Roy.

Bernice Beck gave us an update on the results of our Texas Ruby Red grapefruit sales this year.

We discussed "White Cane Days."  We will be holding our fundraisers it on Thursday May 2, at Jim Bob's Restaurant in McKenna and on Saturday May 4th at the Texaco in Rainier, WA.

The Rainier Lions Club's Pancake Breakfast & Silent Auction date has been changed from March 23, 2013 to April 27, 2013.  There are too many other activities that have been planned for that day.  (Lacey Sunrise Pancake Breakfast, Tacoma Lions Potato Bake, Bonney Lake Lions "Death by Chocolate" and the Rainier Public Schools Annual Auction.)

We support our Rainier Public Schools, so we decided to change the date, so our fundraiser so it will not conflict with their annual fundraiser. 

We thanked the Cub Scouts for their support and help with our quarterly road clean-up.  The turnout on February 9th was the best turnout we've ever had.  There were over 30 people there.  The Cub Scouts and their parents cleaned up the park and walking trail.

Rainier Lions Club Minutes January 28, 2013

CORRECTION:  First order of business:  Brenda Flaherty mentioned that she is not responsible for collecting membership club dues.  This responsibility belongs to our Treasurer:  Linda Lazelle.  King Lion, George Johnson will send the correction to Linda Lazelle.

Juliette:  BINGO was fun last week.  (Rainier Community Cares is the new name of Rainier Community Coalition.)  Renee helps with the Family Fun night dinners and monthly get-togethers.  Strengthening Family Classes will begin again this spring.  They will be in the Annex building at Rainier Chapel.  They will help students with homework, too.  They are hoping to start after spring break and continue through the rest of the school year. 

There is a poster campaign in the schools and a newspaper campaign directed towards parents, so they will not give alcohol or drugs to their kid. 

They meet twice a month.  One meeting is just a planning committee meeting for the organizers at Rainier City Hall February 6, 2013.  (Local Advisory Team) The group meeting is on the second  Wednesday, February 13, 2013. 

Together / Rainier Community Cares is in need of more volunteers to help them with their projects.  They are short of volunteers.

KL George:  Linda Lazelle is supposed to be working with Chris Fanton to see if he will work the pot luck phone tree.

Discuss having 2 meetings a month and make every member a member of the board.  The board meeting will meet from 8:00 – 8:30 PM on the second Monday of the month, after our regular meeting.

ESD grant classes.  Americorp.  Juliette will send us information on grant writing classes. 

Grapefruit: We have sold: 145 boxes.

White Cane Days:  Promoted on the first weekend in May.  We may decide to do it another time of year, if we choose to.  We may do it again in September as well.  Jim Bob’s Restaurant will donate 15% of their proceeds to any non-profit group that schedules and promotes having a fundraising event in their restaurant.  Her father, Leo, was a Lifetime Lions Club Member.  We’re shooting for having our promotion on May 2, 2013 at Jim Bob’s Restaurant in McKenna.

Papa Murphy’s card sales:  Talking to the Cub Scouts about having a card sale.  They’re interested in selling these cards.  (We may want to sell Papa Murphy cards at Bluegrass.)  George will have more information tomorrow night.

Question:  The Rainier Schools annual auction will be on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 3:30 PM.  Do we want to have an auction on that day for the Becky Waldren College Scholarship Auction on the same day? 

Answer:  Yes.  Brenda will donate two bird houses, built to scale, of the Old Church in Rainier, WA.  Brenda’s husband, who is now deceased, made them by hand.  They are one of a kind and very intricate.  Each shingle was cut by hand.

Rainier Family Fun Day:  Kite Flying.  May 12, 2013  Afternoon.  Together may join us, along with the Boy (Cub) Scouts.

Concession Stand:  Discussed building it by the restrooms and covered picnic area.  We have the support of the Mayor of Rainier and the Rainier City Counsel.

Mayor Randy, of Rainier, told George that the City of Rainier’s website should be working in February.  There will be a community calendar on there that we can access and add our events to it. 

Our sight and hearing van needs to be scheduled for next fall.  We’re talking about opening up the afternoon for adults in Rainier, so that they can have their sight and hearing tested, too.  George will have Evan schedule the van.

PIE BAKING CONTEST:  This will be run by the Senior Center.  There will be a $5.00 entry fee.  They will need to turn in 2 pies:  One pie to judge, the other to be auctioned off at Blue Grass.  All proceeds go to the Rainier Senior Center.

CUB SCOUTS YARD SALE:  Rent tables and take a percentage of garage sale sales to be set up along the trail down at the end by the Lions Burger Den.

CUB SCOUTS SING FOR YOUR SUPPER FRIDAY NIGHT:  They used to run this dinner.  George will update us on this.  They may be interested in taking this over for Blue Grass in 2013.

Together / Rainier Community Cares: Feburary 21, 2013 will be having CPR training for the Family. 

RHS Senior Class to do fundraiser:  Seniors have so much going on, that they may not have time to do this during their school year.  It much time, but maybe the music (Band) department might be interested in a fruit fundraiser. 

We’re going to contact Bev Jolley to see if Thurston County Hooved Animal Rescue come to Blue Grass and have a booth.
