Two significant donations received in the last few days should see the MRI appeal cross its $2.8 million finish line.

The latest donations include $90,000 from the Lions Club International Foundation and $30,000 from the Rotary Club of Timaru South.

Appeal chairman Ron Luxton last night said those donations "should put us over the target".

South Canterbury Lions clubs applied for the $90,000 grant, on the understanding that if successful, the Lions and Rotary clubs' phone-a-thon, held over March, would be matched dollar for dollar, up to US$75,000 (NZ$91,478).

As a result, Lions and Rotary clubs have helped pour at least $518,000 into the appeal.

Project manager Stacey Scott said the outcome had far exceeded her expectations.

She said it was initially hoped that the district's Lions and Rotary clubs would contribute to 10 per cent of the project's costs.

Regional chairperson for Lions District 202J Lorna Inch said she never expected the clubs to exceed their target.

Their success came down to the public's generosity, particularly following the phone-a-thon, with some people exceeding what they had pledged over the phone, she said.Mrs Scott said news that people were donating more than they had pledged was a comforting thought.

"My worry was turning a pledge into cold, hard cash. It was all well and good getting pledges, but we needed the money to come in," she said.

The appeal has also recently received an extra $30,000 from the Rotary Club of Timaru South.

Club president Allan Barr and president elect Dick Allan met with Mrs Scott last week to make the donation official and present her with their cheque.

The club, which has 20 members, donated $26,000 from the club's trust, while $1000 was donated by two of its members and $3000 was raised by the club's annual Carols by Candlelight event.
